LUBEC, WASHINGTON COUNTY, MAINE

This page is dedicated to the research of all families with roots in the beautiful seaside town of Lubec, Maine. Lubec is the most easterly point of land in the continental United States. It is home to West Quoddy Head Light, the distinctive candy striped lighthouse. Lubec is a typical Maine village with strong ties to the ocean. The population currently hovers around 1900. I would like this page to become the clearinghouse for research on all Lubec families, past and present. Lubec, formerly known as Plantation # 8 east of Machias in what was then Massachusetts was settled prior to the Revolutionary War by a few settlers from some of the early towns in southern Massachusetts. In 1811 a petition was submitted to the legislature to separate Plantation # 8 into two communities. Moose Island became known as Eastport and the mainland is now known as Lubec. A census was taken in 1811 in Lubec to determine the equitable division of tax money and resources. From this census of 584 souls it is possible to trace many of the families presently residing in Lubec and many, many others in far flung areas of the world.

Rathlin Island, Antrim, Northern Ireland

As time allows I will be placing certain family lines on this page. If you find a connection to any of these families please contact me for additional information or to share your additions and corrections. Of particular interest to me are the families who arrived in Lubec from Rathlin Island, Antrim, Northern Ireland during the early 1840s. Those families include the surnames of: McCurdy, McFaul, McQuaig, Black, Morrison, Horan, McKinley, Anderson, Bradley, McKay, Craig, McQuilkin, Wilkinson, McGowan, Weir and Quirk.
